"Search without Search"

Having dominated the search market for several years, Google has never been one to just rest on its laurels. Its latest leap is to build a search infrastructure that can practically read your mind before you ever type anything into that search box.

We're always fascinated by the latest innovations from Google when it comes to its online search engine. After all, that is its meat and potatoes and continues to drive the backbone of the company.

This latest concept was described by consumer products chief Marissa Mayer at a Web conference in Paris as "search without search," according to a PC World quote.

The idea percolates around a "contextual discovery" formula that can recognize a user based on his or her search habits and current location. Mayer describes, "Can we take location and a user's context, and basically figure out what pieces of information they need?"

So for example, if Google knows that you search "New York Stock Exchange" every day, and you do it from Wall Street, you're probably just looking for financial news. But if you live in Columbus, Ohio and have never Googled finance stuff before, maybe you're planning a trip to New York and want to see where the NYSE is. In that case, your results will be predicated around that.

Basically, Google wants to get to know you and figure out exactly what you want to know without you having to specifically tell it.

This could also link to Google's desire to push into the social networking market, as that's an arena that is all about personalized data. For now, it's just a conceptual talking point but certainly something that is making its way into the Google architecture.

It's a pretty revolutionary direction to take, and one that surely has all sorts of intricate workings on the back end. But hey, if Google can some day figure out that my search for "Kit Kat" really just means I want to hear the classic candy commercial jingle on YouTube, then I'll be happy.

Skype Outage

Millions of Skype users around the world were left incommunicado on Wednesday when the popular internet telephony system was disrupted by a massive glitch.

Skype issued an apology for the outage, which left millions of people unable to log onto the service or connect to any of their contacts. Skype said that the problem appeared to originate in the service’s peer-to-peer system, in which some users’ computers are used as “supernodes” to help the application connect with users.

“Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype,” the company said in a web posting.

“Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes’ as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations.”

Skype prides itself on the robustness of its network, with its last major outage in 2007. But with the company increasingly positioning itself as a corporate communications tool, Wednesday’s snafu could be damaging.

PalmPad from HP

HP is poised to announce three WebOS tablets early next year, Fox News is reporting. All three will be variations of one design, called the PalmPad, and will run a version of WebOS, the operating system for the Palm Pre smartphone. HP acquired Palm in the spring.

Fox says it obtained the spec sheets of the PalmPad from a "trusted source." It's said to have a screen similar in size to the iPad's 9.7-inch display, but it will also include an HDMI port for feeding video to an external screen (the iPad requires a special dongle to do this). Palm's tablet will also have front- and rear-facing cameras, both with LED flashes, the report said. Weight it said to be 1.25 pounds.

For data, the PalmPad will be able to connect to Sprint's 4G WiMax network, though Fox had no details about pricing or whether a contract is required for purchase. The three Palm tablets are said to have only "minor" hardware differences from each other, and all three will run WebOS 2.5.1 (the current version is 2.0). A fourth PalmPad is planned for fall 2011 and will be tailored for university students, with a slightly smaller (8.9-inch) screen.

HP's WebOS tablet has been in the works for a long time. The company confirmed it was working on such a device in an earnings call earlier this year, saying a WebOS tablet product would be coming in "early 2011."

The Fox report says HP will unveil the PalmPad at January's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). According to the show's official schedule, HP has no plans for a press conference or keynote presentation at CES, although the company will have a presence there. A query to HP wasn't immediately returned.

A champion in every sense of the term, he was gracious when he praised his rival Jacques Kallis for getting his maiden double hundred in Test cricket. "He (Jacques) Is a great player. Tendulkar also thanked his millions of fans back home in India and pledged to continue enthralling them with many more such moments. "I Thank all my fans who have supported him in all these years. Dropbox updated to 1.0, brings selective sync to masses

Dropbox has been one of the easiest ways to sync files across multiple computers since its initial release in 2008. On Thursday evening, the company officially rolled out version 1.0 of the program, bringing with it a whole host of improvements, including—to the joy of MacBook Air users everywhere—support for selective folder sync.

According to the company, the update features “huge performance enhancements” thanks to a completely rewritten back-end; Dropbox claims version 1.0 reduces the strain on your computer’s memory by up to 50 percent. And on the Mac, the entire program has been re-coded in Apple’s Cocoa framework for a smaller download size (a 20 percent reduction), and UI improvements have been made across all three platform offerings.

The banner feature of 1.0, however, is undoubtably Selective Sync: this allows you to select which folders and files found within your Dropbox appear on which of your computers. Each computer has a separate preference pane within the application, so you can, say, choose only certain folders to sync with your work computer while the rest of your files remain accessible on the Web. The company has a good how-to available for those curious about the feature’s particulars.

Additionally, the update brings support for extended attribute sync. This allows users to easily upload and sync files with resource forks (parts of a file that certain programs use for storing information) without fear of data corruption or deletion.

Dropbox 1.0 is free and available for download from the company’s Website in Mac, Windows, and Linux flavors; Mac users should be running OS X 10.4 or later.

It is a jump step for Walt Disney India. Walt Disney is operating in India since 2004 and ,ade its first full length animated Indian movie "Roadside Romeo" with Indian actors and animators.
Now it will make a Telugu film with famous film star Siddhartha Narayan and ShrutiHassan. Renowned film director Prakash Rao Kovelamudi will be the writer-director of this Telugu film. K Raghavendra Rao, who has director and producer of 125 films will be the producer. The film will also be dubbed in Tamil and expected to be released by January 2011.
According to a report (2009) from Earns and Young, South Indian cinema accounts for about three fourth of total movies produced in India. These movies are made in four major South Indian languages Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Apple battle iAd vs Google AdSense and HTML5 vs Flash

Last week was a busy week for Apple, starting with the new iPhone agreement to develop applications using the SDK 4. I don’t want to make comments about that at this point. I believe anything can happen before they release the iPhone SDK 4, moving forward Steve Jobs presented the first preview of the iPhone OS 4, which finally will support Multitasking , but the main point during his presentation was the iAd announcement which in my opinion impact Adobe and Google.


Months ago Apple acquired Quattro Wireless, a major player in mobile ad space, during this event Steve Jobs announced an advertising service called iAd, which offers more them simple advertisement service. When you touch an ads in iPhone today you are redirected to a browser closing your application, the new iAd is integrated in the platform and will change the user experience allowing to see ads without quit of the application. Apple will provide the whole ads infrastructure and will share the revenue with the developers.


Steve Jobs used an News app to demo the iAd integration, the app included a Toy Store iAd banner. coincidence or not the ads use HTML 5 and not Flash. Steve wasn’t subtly and mention HTML 5 at least three times, you can see the audience laughing out loud.


It seems iAd and HTML 5 are part of apple strategy to kill Flash, at the same time will help Apple to increase revenue, will be interesting to see Google strategy to convince developer to use AdSense instead iAd.

Man Made Eggs - Beware

During a recent raid on a wholesale centre in Guangzhou city, the capital of China 's Guangdong province, a large quantity of fake eggs was seized.

Their wholesale price is 0.15 yuan (S$0.03) each - half the price of a real egg.

Consumers have a hard time telling a genuine egg from a fake one. This is good news for unscrupulous entrepreneurs, who are even conducting three-day courses in the production of artificial eggs for less than S$150. A reporter with Hong Kong-based Chinese magazine East Week enrolled in one such course.

To create egg white, the instructor - a woman in her 20s - used assorted ingredients such as gelatin, an unknown powder, benzoic acid, coagulating material and even alum, which is normally used for industrial processes.

For egg yolk, some lemon-yellow colouring powder is mixed to a liquid and the concoction stirred. The liquid is then poured into a round-shaped plastic mould and mixed with so-called 'magic water', which contains calcium chloride.

This gives the 'yolk' a thin outer membrane, firming it up. The egg is then shaped with a mould. The shell is not forgotten. Paraffin wax and an unidentified white liquid are poured onto the fake egg, which is then left to dry.

The artificial egg can be fried sunny-side up or steamed. Although bubbles appear on the white of the egg, those who have tasted it say the fake stuff tastes very much like the real thing.

But experts warn of the danger of eating fake eggs. Not only do they not contain any nutrients, a Hong Kong Chinese University professor warned that long-term consumption of alum could cause dementia

 To make the egg white, various ingredients, including a powder and alum, are mixed together.

 The 'yolk' is shaped in the round mould. 'Magic water' containing calcium chloride is used. 

Hardy shells are formed by pouring paraffin wax and a liquid onto the egg, which are then left to dry.
